The look of love
The look of love

Restaurants and romantics have the right idea when they turn the lights down and light candles. Eyes and love are connected in physiological ways most of us are unaware of. A dimly lit room not only hides the wrinkles and imperfections, but it also enlarges one’s pupils. Numerous studies have shown that our pupils dilate wider than normal when we are excited about something (or someone).  This subconscious signal not only gives the Ooh la la!, but it also makes women appear more attractive. In the 1960’s  Hess et al studied the effect of pupil size on feelings of attraction. Descriptions such as “pretty”, “soft” were ascribed to women with larger pupils. This has been known for  over  500 years.  Women in Italy used an extract from the Belladonna plant to dilate their pupils because they believed it would increase attractiveness. Belladonna literally means “Beautiful lady”.

So next time you want to make an impression, light those candles and let your eyes do the talking.
